The first computers in car were invariably ones that people had lying around after upgrading to a new one.
However now the computers installed range from brand new almost purpose built, laptops and still those left over ones.
Board sizes range from ATX, MATX, ITX and the new pico size.

This certainly the easiest to do, however it probably is the least likely to look like it doesn't belong there, and thus being it is more likely to attract unwanted attention from scumbags unless it can easily be removed whilst parked.
